How to cut down on caffeine
Caffeine can be found in coffee, tea, colas and chocolate,
as well as some over the counter medication and cold tablets.
So if you eat a bar of plain chocolate and drink one mug of filter coffee in a day, or if you drink two mugs of tea and a can of cola, you'll have almost reached the recommended caffeine limit of 200mg.
Thankfully tea has, on average, half the caffeine levels of brewed coffee. Colas and other drinks vary in caffeine content. Here's a useful guide to the caffeine content across various products, to help you monitor your intake.
200mg is equivalent to:
2 mugs of instant coffee (c. 100mg of caffeine each).
Or 1 mug of filter coffee (140mg each).
Or 2 mugs of tea (75mg each).
Or 5 cans of cola (up to 40 mg each).
Or 2 cans off ‘energy drink' (up to 80 mg each).
Or 4 (50g) bars of plain chocolate (up to 50 mg each).
Or 8 (50g) bars of milk chocolate (up to 25 mg each).
Although the FSA advice doesn't mean you have to completely cut out caffeine from your diet, it does highlight the need for moderation. But at Tetley, we've made that easier to manage. Here's how.
