From Tiny Roots to Thriving Trees
Income diversification in Malawi
Since 2023 we have supported the Ethical Tea Partnership’s Project Mthunzi, meaning ‘shade’. Smallholders receive seedlings best suited to their land, whether boundary, shade or fruit trees. The fruit can be sold locally for extra income, while the trees help capture carbon and strengthen climate resilience.
As of October 2025, 169,402 trees have been planted, with nurseries producing over 281,000 seedlings. 2,900 farmers have been trained in tree planting and care, 120 in family business and management, and 90 in beekeeping.
98% of trees distributed were planted, 65% of participants adopted agroforestry, and 79% diversified their income. Among beekeepers, 71% reported higher earnings.

Solar Lamps
Only 2% of Malawi’s rural poor have electricity, relying on candles and paraffin for light. Through Project Kuwala, we worked alongside the Ethical Tea Partnership to distribute solar lamps to 6,600 tea workers and their families.
Tea workers have formed 320 Village Savings and Loans Associations, supporting 5,613 members to save, earn interest, and access loans. Over half are women, 41% have bought phones, and 50% have upgraded their homes with iron roofs.
